Stony Brook gets payback, knocks Delaware out of 1st, 17-3
STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- Donald Liotine ran for 170 yards on 27 carries and his 33-yard touchdown run with 5:27 put an exclamation point on Stony Brook's 17-3 win over Delaware in a showdown of teams vying for the postseason and the Colonial Athletic Association title on a wind-whipped Saturday afternoon.
Stony Brook rolled up 400 yards of total offense while holding Delaware to half that number.
A year ago Delaware derailed the Seawolves' hopes of a conference title with a 24-20 upset. This year's loss knocks the Blue Hens out of a first-place tie with Maine, and any hope Delaware has of qualifying for the Football Championship Subdivision field likely rest on beating Villanova in the regular season finale next week at Delaware -- a team the Blue Hens have lost to six straight times and in 11 of the last 12 meetings.
Delaware had three field goal attempts go awry. Kicker Frank Raggo missed from 35- and 34-yards out and a bad snap on a 26-yard attempt kept the kicker from getting his foot on the ball.
Alex Lucansky kicked 26-yard field goal as time expired in the first half to give Stony Brook a 3-0 lead and Donavin Washington pulled in a 27-yard pass from Joe Carbone early in the third to put the Seawolves (7-3, 5-2) up, 10-0.
Raggo connected from 28-yards out to start the fourth quarter, but CeQuan Jefferson picked off a Pat Kehoe pass with six minutes left and, three plays later, Liotine found a hole up the middle and dashed 33 yards for a touchdown with 5:27 left to seal the victory.
