Craig Curran and Thomas Mikkelsen both struck doubles as Ross County hit Montrose for six at Links Park.Michael Gardyne and Alex Schalk were also on target as County continued their perfect start to the Betfred Cup with a 6-0 triumph over their League Two opponents.County replaced Scott Fox, Marcus Fraser and Schalk with Aaron McCarey, Kenny van der Weg and Mikkelsen following their opening win over Alloa but there was no disruption to their rhythm.After early chances for Gardyne and Curran, Mikkelsen put County in front on 15 minutes, nodding in Ryan Dow's cross.County were two to the good on 27 minutes as ex-Dundee United defender Sean Dillon pushed Andrew Davies over in the box, allowing Curran the opportunity to tuck the ball away from 12 yards.It got worse for Montrose on the half-hour mark as Curran teed up Gardyne and his low finish, initially well-saved by Jordan Millar, rolled over the line.Matthew Wallace and Terry Masson fired shots over for the hosts but Curran's second on the stroke of half-time, coming via the crossbar after Gardyne's free-kick was not cleared, put the Staggies in cruise control.Mikkelsen notched his second 10 minutes after half-time when Dow played him in and Schalk did likewise from Gardyne's superb ball.County cruised through the remaining half hour, ensuring a win against Group D rivals Hibernian on Friday will all but secure safe passage to the second round.ends

Hibernian 4-0 Montrose

Hibernian striker Simon Murray scored a brace on his competitive debut as Neil Lennon's side cruised to a 4-0 victory over Montrose in their opening Betfred Cup clash.Murray's namesake Fraser was also on target for the hosts in an impressive performance that saw the 18-year-old deservedly named man of the match.Substitute Brian Graham netted a late penalty to round off the scoring on a comfortable afternoon for the Leith side.Hibs will face a tougher challenge when they travel to Ross County for their second Group D clash on Friday.The result of this tie never looked in doubt as the hosts produced a professional display against their Ladbrokes League Two counterparts.Martin Boyle had already fired a shot across the visitors' bow with a low drive after nine minutes that came back of the post.But Hibs side seized control three minutes later when Simon Murray opened the scoring.Lewis Stevenson did well to dig out a cross from the left and the former Dundee United forward headed in at the front post.Fraser Murray looked lively during the early stages and the teenager, in only his fourth appearance, added a second in the 22nd minute.The forward linked with Simon before drilling a low drive beyond Allan Fleming from 12 yards.The visitors wasted a rare chance to score moments after the break when Gary Fraser pulled a shot wide from an Andrew Steeves cross and Hibs made them pay in the 53rd minute with a third goal.After missing a great opportunity himself minutes earlier, Simon Murray nodded in Boyle's cross from inside the area.Graham climbed off the bench and added a fourth in the 88th minute from the penalty spot after Graham Webster was penalised for handling a Stevenson cross.

Peterhead reach League One play-off final

Peterhead will play Forfar in the Ladbrokes League One play-off final after beating 10-man Montrose 3-0 on Saturday to wrap up a 4-1 aggregate victory.Rory McAllister headed the hosts in front in the 34th minute before doubling their lead from the spot six minutes into the second half after Nicky Riley was brought down in the box.Montrose were reduced to 10 men when Matty Smith was shown a straight red in the 69th minute.And things went from bad to worse for the visitors when Jordon Brown made it 3-0 in stoppage time.

Montrose and Peterhead have it all to play for in the second leg after a 1-1 draw in their play-off clash at Links Park.The League One relegation-threatened visitors took an early lead after just 10 minutes as a poor clearance fell to Ryan Strachan and he made no mistake as he fired a 35-yard thunderbolt into the top corner.But their lead lasted just four minutes as the League Two Gable Endies struck back when Liam Callaghan set up Chris Templeman and he slotted home from the centre of the penalty area moments after hitting the crossbar.Montrose striker Gary Fraser came close to handing his side the lead with a couple of second-half attempts, while the away side enjoyed the majority of possession but could not put any of their chances away as they head into Saturday's return leg at Balmoor level.

Edinburgh City come from behind to leave Cowdenbeath cut adrift in League Two

Edinburgh City eased their relegation worries after coming from behind to win 2-1 at Ladbrokes Scottish League Two basement side Cowdenbeath.The Citizens went into the crucial clash only four points above their hosts but they left Central Park with renewed optimism in their bid for survival. It looked as though it was going to be another night to forget for the League Two newcomers after Dale Carrick gave Cowdenbeath a 12th-minute lead.But Dougie Gair equalised five minutes later and Josh Walker completed the comeback in the 64th minute.It was a first victory in eight games for Edinburgh City and left Cowdenbeath, who had Fraser Mullen sent off in the second half, seven points adrift at the bottom.Clyde slipped down a place to ninth after a 2-1 home defeat by Montrose.First-half goals from Kerr Hay and Greg Pascazio left Montrose in control and they held on despite Peter MacDonald pulling one back on 74 minutes.In Tuesday's other game, Sean Dickson scored deep into stoppage time to give Stirling a 1-0 win over third-placed Elgin.

Montrose 0-1 Ross County

Ross County left it late to take three points in their opening game of the Betfred Cup group stage with a contentious late penalty by Brian Graham sealing a 1-0 win over Montrose.Graham converted from the spot in the 86th minute to ensure the Premiership side edged past their League Two hosts.Montrose had the first chance when Gary Fraser broke through the Staggies defence before shooting from 25 yards only for the ball to miss the post by inches.Martin Woods was the first to come close to scoring for the Premiership side but his overhead volley from close range went too high and moments later an Alex Schalk low drive from inside the box was caught well by Montrose goalkeeper Jordan Millar.It was Montrose with the next chance close to the break when Chris Templeman's chipped effort was denied by Scott Fox. Fraser again blasted a shot over the crossbar in the closing moments of the half.Montrose came close to breaking the deadlock when a Paul Watson free-kick landed to Ross Campbell in the box but the ball hit Fox's legs only for Fraser to strike the rebound just wide of the post.Ross County created a few chances for themselves in the opening stages of the second half but Kenny Van Der Weg fluffed the first opportunity as he hit his effort high after decent work from Michael Gardyne found him down the left.On the hour mark it looked as though Ross County took the lead but Chris Robertson's close-range shot was ruled offside. It was almost 15 minutes later when Jonathan Franks had the next chance for either side but Miller was quick to catch the shot from just outside the box.With four minutes to go County were awarded a penalty when Michael Bolochoweckyj tripped Graham inside the box with Graham stepping up to send Millar the wrong way to hit the back of the net and that decided the match.ends

Gary Fraser goal lifts Montrose to season-ending win over Berwick

Gary Fraser scored the only goal as Montrose ended their Ladbrokes League Two campaign with a 1-0 win against Berwick.Neither team had anything to play for and Fraser's 19th goal of the campaign settled a low-key affair.The striker collected Christopher Templeman's pass and slotted past Kevin Walker two minutes before the break.Blair Henderson saw his effort well blocked by Montrose defender Jordan Millar while Ross Campbell was denied by Rangers goalkeeper Kevin Walker at the other end.Montrose held on to head into the summer having ended their seven-game winless run while Berwick's five-match unbeaten streak came to an end.

Arbroath and Montrose share goalless draw

Scottish League Two strugglers Arbroath and Montrose cancelled each other out in a goalless draw at Gayfield Park.The home side had the better of the early chances with Gable Endies goalkeeper Jordan Millar saving from Mark Whatley and Greg Rutherford.Millar was called upon again nine minutes from time when he turned away Darren Ramsay's close-range header.Montrose created little all afternoon but defender Aaron Comrie threatened a winner in the closing stages with a shot which flew over the crossbar.

Craig Beattie nets late equaliser for Stirling

Craig Beattie netted a last-gasp equaliser to secure a 1-1 draw for Stirling against Montrose.Montrose were heading for a first win in six matches when Graham Webster broke the deadlock in the 58th minute with a curling effort, his 10th goal of the season.But Beattie, a half-time substitute, curled home a free-kick in the 90th minute to extend their unbeaten run to four matches.Stirling were also indebted to the performance of Chris Smith after the goalkeeper kept out two efforts from striker Gary Fraser.

Flying start earns East Fife victory

East Fife continued their march towards the Ladbrokes League Two title as three goals in the first 24 minutes saw struggling Montrose brushed aside 3-0.The opener came when a short corner was worked to Kevin Smith and from his cross, Jason Kerr's shot was deflected in by team-mate Jonathan Page.It was 2-0 just three minutes later when Aaron Comrie fouled Smith and Stevie Campbell fired home a superb free-kick.And with little more than a quarter of the game played, Gary Naysmith neatly played in Nathan Austin to score the third.Kyle Wilkie went close to a fourth early in the second half, shooting just wide, and Austin was crowded out. Steven Campbell's effort was just kept out by keeper Jordan Millar before a quiet final 20 minutes.
