Lloyd Sam boosts Red Bulls late after DC United's controversial red card

HARRISON, N.J. -- Lloyd Sam scored in the 90th minute to lift the New York Red Bulls to a 1-0 win over 10-man D.C. United on Wednesday night.

A deflected ball fell to Sam, who took one touch to the corner of the 6-yard box and rolled a ball through the legs of United goalkeeper Bill Hamid.

New York (9-8-10) won its fourth straight home game and avoided a three-game season sweep against United (14-9-5) in the teams' final meeting of the regular season.

United's Fabian Espindola received a red card in the 32nd minute for a rough challenge on Dax McCarty. Hamid made several late saves, but was denied his ninth clean sheet of the season. He blocked Peguy Luyindula's close-range attempt in the 71st minute and Thierry Henry's open shot in the 77th.

New York's Bradley Wright-Phillips, the MLS-scoring leader, did not play in the second half.
