Sandell leaves Portsmouth beached
Newport applied the brakes to Portsmouth's fast start to the season as substitute Andy Sandell's late winner gave the Welsh side a 1-0 win at Fratton Park.Sandell curled an 80th minute free-kick toward the far post from wide on the right and the ball eluded everyone to nestle into the far corner and give Newport their first win of the season.Newport almost took the lead on 14 minutes when Kevin Feeley looped a header on top of the bar and Robbie Wilmott's follow-up shot was beaten away by Pompey keeper Paul Jones,Ryan Taylor wasted a glorious chance to fire Pompey ahead on the half hour. Neat play by Craig Westcarr opened up Newport down the right and Jed Wallace found Taylor unmarked 14 yards out but with only keeper Joe Day to beat he screwed his shot wide. Both keepers were called into action with Jones diving left to clutch Chris Zabrowski's sharp header and Day dropping sharply on to Ricky Holmes' free-kick.The early-season pace-setters continued to make heavy weather against a Newport side who showed more resilience than their one point total suggested, although Day had to launch himself to claw Jed Wallace's well-struck shot from the corner of the 18-yard box.Pompey failed to rouse themselves to mount a last-ditch charge, although defender Paul Robinson wasted a late chance by heading over from 10 yards.
