Shrimpers return to winning ways

Second half goals from Michael Timlin and Barry Corr saw Southend get back to winning ways with a 2-0 triumph against Carlisle at Roots Hall. After an uneventful first half, Timlin blasted the Shrimpers in front after 50 minutes when he sent a stunning 20-yard volley flying into the top right hand corner of the net for his first goal of the season. However, Carlisle were soon feeling even worse when they had strong shouts for a penalty turned down after Steven Rigg appeared to be brought down in the box by goalkeeper Ted Smith. But referee Trevor Kettle opted to wave play on and Southend made the most of the let off in the 72nd minute when Corr netted for the third game in succession. The Irishman reacted sharply after David Worrall had played Timlin's left wing cross into his path and neatly fired home a close-range volley to end Southend's two-match losing streak.
