Bayern Munich beat Mainz to get Bundesliga title party started

Bayern Munich celebrated their third straight Bundesliga title after beating Mainz 2-0 at the Allianz Arena on the final day of the season.

A Robert Lewandowski penalty and Bastian Schweinsteiger goal gave Pep Guardiola's men control of the game in front of 75,000 fans.

Mainz put up a brave but at times tired resistance having already reached their goal of survival for the season, and they were happy enough not to come away off the back of a hiding as they and their fans sat back to see Bayern take possession of their trophy, and the party begin in Munich.

The title was already secure before kickoff, as was Mainz's mid-table security.

Facing a Bayern side that contained seven World Cup winners, including Spain's Xabi Alonso, Mainz coach Martin Schmidt left out his side's most lethal weapon Shinji Okazaki for the first time this season.

Bayern had an unusual threat of their own early on, with Philipp Lahm the first to test Loris Karius in the Mainz goal with a header.

Lewandowski, chasing a hat trick to catch Frankfurt's Alexander Meier at the top of the goalscoring charts, had an opportunity to get one on the board when he beat Karius to the ball, but he could not get in a shot.

Schweinsteiger sent a glancing header wide as the chances multiplied for Bayern before they finally took the lead.

It was no surprise that Lewandowski was invited to take a penalty after Niko Bungert handled inside the area, and he stroked in the spot-kick to move to two goals away from Meier.

Schweinsteiger made sure the result would not be in any doubt when he doubled Bayern's advantage early in the second half, moving their focus on to helping Lewandowski get the goals he needed to top the scoring charts for the second season running.

Despite their efforts, they could not help the Pole to his personal prize while it was substitute Claudio Pizarro -- his future in doubt as the end of his contract approaches - who almost signed off with a goal.
