Werder Bremen 1-0 Eintracht Frankfurt
A Davie Selke strike midway through the second half ruined Thomas Schaaf's return to Bremen as Werder edged closer to a place in Europe next season with a 1-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt. The Germany Under-19 international netted the only goal of the game as Bremen took full advantage of a draw between Hoffenheim and Dortmund to climb to seventh in the Bundesliga. For Schaaf, on his first return to the Weserstadion as an opponent, defeat ends all hope of qualifying for Europe next season with his Frankfurt side still not entirely safe either with only six points separating them from the bottom three. It was an emotional day for Schaaf as he returned to the club where he had spent four decades as a player and coach. His departure in 2013 was the end of a long and largely successful era, and it was hardly surprising therefore that he was met by warm applause from the Bremen faithful. He insisted he was only focused on winning the game for Frankfurt, though, and that message appeared to have reached his team too as they started strongly, Sonny Kittel wasting a good early opportunity with only Koen Casteels to beat.Casteels then gifted Kittel with a better chance to score when he raced out of his area and headed the ball to the Frankfurt forward, off the back of his own defender Clemens Fritz.Kittel took aim for the open goal, but the Belgian goalkeeper scampered back and was able to slide in and clear the danger. The Eagles were asking all of the questions before Franco Di Santo wasted Bremen's first opportunity, heading over in the 23rd minute.Werder came out strong in the second half with Di Santo delivering a weak effort straight into Kevin Trapp's arms before Selke put them in front.Assani Lukimya's header was turned in somewhat fortuitously by the forward, who will be moving to Leipzig in the summer, with his upper chest proving decisive in turning the ball over the line.Selke nearly added a second when his shot was turned onto the crossbar by Trapp and Di Santo volleyed the rebound wide when it seemed easier to score. It did not prove to be a costly miss, though, as Bremen held on for all three points to strengthen their bid for a return to Europe next season.ends
