Doue double helps PSG come from two down to beat Monaco

Désiré Doué came off the bench to inspire Paris St Germain's remarkable 3-2 comeback victory in the first leg of their Champions League play-off against Ligue 1 rivals Monaco.

Doue started the evening on the bench, called upon to replace the injured Ousmane Dembélé with his side two goals down having just missed a penalty through Vitinha.

But the 20-year-old France striker, who netted twice in last season's final win, scored two and set up the other to mastermind a stunning shift in fortunes at Stade Louis II.

It was a thumping anti-climax for Sebastien Pocognoli's side, who looked to be cruising when Folarin Balogun scored twice in the first 20 minutes but played the majority of the second half with 10 men thanks to Aleksandr Golovin's sending off.

The frantic pace was set immediately as Monaco drew first blood with just a minute gone. Golovin provided the spark, burrowing in on the left and standing a cross up for Balogun to head home.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia saw a shot blocked by the alert Wout Faes when PSG recovered sufficiently to mount a response but despite modest possession, Monaco managed to double their lead in the 19th minute.

The hosts won the ball in midfield before Maghnes Akliouche set Balogun up in head-to-head dash against Marquinhos, the striker edged it and showed a cool head in front of goal to bag his second of the evening.

With barely a pause there was drama at the other end, Faes conceding a penalty after taking down Kvaratskhelia, only for Philipp Köhn to bail him out.

Vitinha's strike was on target but Kohn did everything to keep it out. When Dembele left the field injured, the visitors must have felt events were conspiring against them but it proved a blessing in disguise.

Doue had only been on the field a matter of moments when he found himself in the right place to apply the finishing touch to Bradley Barcola's well-worked assist. After a check with VAR, the goal was approved and the fightback was in motion.

By the 41st minute it gathered real momentum as Achraf Hakimi levelled. Doue was crucial once more, unleashing a rasping shot coming in from the flank, with Kohn fending away but not fully clearing as Hakimi sniffed out the chance.

Improbably, there was still enough time before the break for PSG to take the lead but neither Kvaratskhelia nor João Neves could quite find the finish.

For Monaco, things continued to veer badly off course when Golovin was sent off in the opening seconds of the second for a studs-up challenge on Vitinha.

The game now revolved around Monaco's attempts to stifle and head to the capital with a draw, but each block and tackle only brought more pressure.

There were 23 minutes remaining when Doue completed his remarkable outing with the winning goal. The impressive Kvaratskhelia combined with Hakimi and Warren Zaïre-Emery to lay a chance on for the 20-year-old finisher.

He made no mistake, sealing a turnaround that will see Luis Enrique's men start as firm favourites when they resume hostilities at Parc des Princes.
