Bologna were promoted to Serie A via the playoffs on Tuesday as they secured a swift return to the Italian top flight.

After sliding into Serie B 12 months ago, Bologna successfully rebuilt and clinched promotion after a 1-1 home draw against Pescara.

The first leg at Pescara finished goalless, but the away-goals rule is not the determining factor in Serie B's playoff system. Instead, the format rewards teams for performance in the regular season, and in the case of a draw on aggregate the team that finished higher up the table is promoted.

Bologna took fourth place, with Pescara seventh. Those positions meant Pescara had to win on Tuesday to be promoted to the top tier, and their chances were slim when Bologna seized a 38th-minute lead through Gianluca Sansone.

Pescara equalised in the 57th minute when substitute Cristian Pasquato netted, and a red card for Bologna's Ibrahima Mbaye nine minutes later complicated the hosts' task.

However, Bologna clung on, joining Serie A newcomers Carpi and Frosinone in being promoted.
