Stephen Hendrie scores winner as Southend see off Shrewsbury
Stephen Hendrie claimed a late winner as 10-man Southend beat lowly Shrewsbury 2-1 to see Phil Brown's men move up to seventh in League One.Will Atkinson fired Southend in front against the run of play in the 24th minute when his 25-yard drive flew high into the net but Andy Mangan equalised just after the break. The visitors lost Michael Timlin to a second yellow card after 65 minutes before Hendrie fired home the winner with 11 minutes left.Shrewsbury, looking forward to hosting Manchester United in the fifth round of the FA Cup later this month, had made much of the early running as they chased a breakthrough.Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro saw his third-minute header from James Wallace's corner cleared off the line by Atkinson before Wallace's shot was deflected just off target.Wallace, set up by Andy Mangan, then missed an even better chance, slicing wide with just keeper Dan Bentley to beat.Shrewsbury continued to look dangerous after falling behind with Bentley denying Jack Grimmer from point-blank range.Southend ended the first half well with Jack Payne's deflected shot coming back off a post before keeper Jayson Leutwiler did well to keep out long-range shots from Hendrie and Ryan Leonard.Shrewsbury equalised two minutes into the second half when Mangan reacted quickest to score from close range after Southend were unable to clear an Ian Black free-kick.Home skipper Nat Knight-Percival then had an effort scrambled off the line before Southend substitute Timlin was sent off for a second bookable offence in the 65th minute following a challenge on Grimmer. But Southend's 10 men had the final word 11 minutes from time when sub Jamar Loza's low cross from the right was smashed high into the net from 12 yards by West Ham loanee Hendrie to sentence Shrewsbury to a 10th home league defeat of the season.
