Sam Winnall bags brace as Barnsley ease past Shrewsbury
Barnsley wrapped up a third successive victory in League One with a 3-0 win at fellow strugglers Shrewsbury.Top scorer Sam Winnall, a former Shrewsbury loanee, put the visitors in the driving seat by scoring twice inside six first-half minutes before Alfie Mawson added a third. His opener came in the 15th minute when he raced onto a long clearance from goalkeeper Adam Davies to fire powerfully past Mark Halstead from the edge of the penalty area.Winnall then quickly took his tally for the season to 12 when he ran at the Shrewsbury defence and drove a low shot from 20 yards to the bottom corner of the net.Shrewsbury gradually improved as the first period developed and were handed the perfect opportunity to cut the arrears in the 42nd minute when Andy Mangan was pulled to the ground by James Bree. But Mangan's penalty was brilliantly kept out by Davies, diving low to his right.Davies then made another fine save on the stroke of half-time when he tipped Nat Knight-Percival's close-range header over the bar.Shrewsbury manager Micky Mellon responded by making a triple substitution at half-time but Barnsley continued to look dangerous and they added a third goal in the 72nd minute when defender Mawson followed up to score after his initial header from a corner had been blocked on the line.
