Augsburg move out of Bundesliga basement by slowing high-flying Wolfsburg
Augsburg frustrated high-flying Wolfsburg to move out of the Bundesliga's relegation zone with a goalless draw in Bavaria. The hosts made a mockery of the 15 points separating the two sides, although they were unable to find a winning goal against a side who ended the game with 10 men following a red card for defender Dante.Wolfsburg were a shadow of the side which edged closer to the last 16 in the Champions League in midweek, and could be happy to come away with a point from the Augsburg Arena.Augsburg made it difficult to work out which side was propping up the Bundesliga and which was pushing for a place in the Champions League next season having picked up an important win in Europe in midweek.Indeed it was the hosts, who came into the game with only two league wins all season, who looked more confident.Wolfsburg conversely appeared tired from their trip to Moscow in midweek and Augsburg tried to take advantage with the better chances all coming in front of Diego Benaglio's goal, with the home team's captain Paul Verhaegh going the closest in the first half with a shot just wide from 10 yards. It was a different story in the second half with the Wolves re-emerging with a spring in their step, yet the first big opportunity again fell for Augsburg, with Dominik Kohr heading just wide from a good position. The only remaining notable moment of the game was the red card shown to Dante in the 85th minute, which came with a rather harsh second booking for a foul on Raul Bobadilla.Bobadilla then had the last shot of the game in the 90th minute, but Benaglio made an easy save, clutching the ball and a point to his chest.
