Bas Dost fires decisive goal as Wolfsburg beat Eintracht Frankfurt
Wolfsburg rode their luck to make a winning start to their Bundesliga season with a 2-1 triumph over Eintracht Frankfurt.
Things appeared to be going according to plan for Dieter Hecking's men when Ivan Perisic's opener was added to by Bas Dost, but Stefan Reinartz pulled a goal back immediately for the Eagles.
Armin Veh's visitors enjoyed the better of the second half, but failed to force an equaliser, letting Wolfsburg off the hook somewhat at the VW-Arena.
Frankfurt had a spring in their step at the start of the game and they almost had the lead too, but Haris Seferovic's goal was ruled out for offside as he latched on to Luc Castaignos' pass.
Wolfsburg took the lead with their first real attack when Perisic found acres of room at the far post to head in Max Kruse's cross in the 13th minute.
Dost doubled Wolfsburg's lead soon after, taking advantage of more disorganised defending to turn the ball into the roof of the net at the far post after Kruse mishit his effort.
Frankfurt responded immediately with Reinartz heading them back into the game when Wolfsburg's defence this time opened up, allowing the new recruit from Bayer Leverkusen to meet Seferovic's cross unmarked from eight yards out.
The goal gave Frankfurt belief which they carried with them into the second half, putting their hosts under pressure and giving Koen Casteels plenty to do in goal.
Castaignos and Seferovic were their biggest threats, but they lacked a finisher of the calibre of last season's league top-scorer Alexander Meier, who missed out due to injury -- much to Wolfsburg's relief as they held on to all three points on a day when their coveted midfielder Kevin De Bruyne struggled to make an impact.
