Western Sydney Wanderers held to goalless draw by Adelaide United

Federico Piovaccari rues a missed opportunity.

A-League leaders Western Sydney Wanderers were unable to start 2016 on a winning note as they drew 0-0 with Adelaide United at Parramatta Stadium.

The draw, which saw several controversial refereeing decisions, extended the Wanderers' unbeaten run to 10 matches, while the seventh-place Reds are now unbeaten in five games.

Ref Ben Williams first faced the wrath of the home fans when disallowing a goal by Federico Piovaccari.

Piovaccari got past Dylan McGowan before beating visiting goalkeeper Eugene Galekovic, but play was pulled back for shirt pulling even though it appeared both players were guilty of the offence.

Then it was Adelaide's turn to feel aggrieved after Michael Marrone was brought down in the area by Nikolai Topor-Stanley and it looked a certain penalty to everyone but the referee.

After an even first half hour, the Wanderers dominated.

Andreu, Romeo Castelen, Piovaccari -- who was particularly wasteful -- and Gol Gol Mebrahtu all had chances to win it for the home side -- while Craig Goodwin could have stolen the points for Adelaide late on.

Wanderers move three points clear of Brisbane Roar at the top of the table, with Adelaide now a point shy of Wellington Phoenix who sit in the final playoff position.
