Newcastle Jets got their 2015-16 A-League season off to a winning start with a 2-1 victory at Wellington Phoenix FC.

David Carney gave Jets the lead at the Westpac Stadium on 30 minutes when he headed in from Ki-Je Lee's delivery.

But two minutes into first-half injury time, Wellington Phoenix FC restored parity as Roly Bonevacia's shot deflected home.

Scott Miller's side retook the lead in the second half when Milos Trifunovic tucked in from Carney's cross.

Newcastle Jets were reduced to 10 men on 77 minutes after Nigel Boogaard picked up a second yellow but they held on for all three points.
