Mendy, Mendoza fire Chennaiyin past FC Pune City, into second place
Goals from Bernard Mendy and Stiven Mendoza fired Chennaiyin FC into second place after a 2-1 defeat of FC Pune City in Chennai on Saturday.
Mendy kicked off the scoring in the 33rd minute, placing a glancing header well out of reach of Pune City keeper Steve Simonsen after a long throw-in from Dhanachandra Singh.
The pacy Mendoza then secured the points three minutes after the break. The Colombian latched on to an Elano pass then outran his markers before rounding Simonsen and slotting into an empty net for his sixth goal in six games.
Kalu Uche later earned the visitors a consolation goal in the 74th minute, lashing home a left-footed into the bottom corner of Karanjit Singh's net.
Chennaiyin are next in action Nov. 5, when they visit Kerala Blasters in Kochi. While FC Pune City will host the Blasters a week before at their Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex Stadium.
