Ryan Blake goal helps Chesham upset Bristol Rovers in FA Cup
Ryan Blake's 77th-minute goal sent Sky Bet League Two side Bristol Rovers tumbling out of the FA Cup at the hands of Chesham United, who missed a penalty and still secured a memorable 1-0 first-round victory at the Memorial Stadium. The striker's low, swerving 25-yard shot caught Rovers goalkeeper Lee Nicholls flat-footed and gave the Southern League side a lead they defended with their lives.Chesham should have been ahead at the break, but Dave Pearce saw his 28th-minute spot-kick saved by Nicholls, diving to his right, after Tom Lockyer had brought down Brad Wadkins. In the closing stages, Chesham goalkeeper Shane Gore made fine saves from Ellis Harrison and Jermaine Easter as Rovers applied incessant pressure for the first time. The visitors had the better of the first half up to the penalty miss. Curtis Ujah shot into the side-netting on 24 minutes after Blake had headed down a Toby Little corner. But Rovers sprang to life after their reprieve, Harrison volleying just wide, while Billy Bodin and Matt Taylor forced saves from Gore.It was a sweet victory for Chesham player-coach Barry Hayles, who appeared as a 72nd-minute substitute against the club where he made his name.
