Sydney FC down Adelaide, extend unbeaten record to 16 games
Two goals in two minutes have kept Sydney FC's undefeated run going, with Alex Brosque and Milos Ninkovic lifting the A-League leaders to a 2-0 victory over Adelaide.
The Sky Blues struggled early on Friday night at a slippery Allianz Stadium and were left frustrated by a wrongly disallowed Filip Holosko goal.
But Graham's Arnold's men found their form in the second half to stretch their unbeaten streak to 16 games, notching their 12th win and 10th clean sheet. They climb eight points clear at the top of the ladder.
The Reds, who entered the match 27 points behind Sydney, remain second last on goal difference despite strong displays by Marcelo Carrusca and Isaias.
Right-back Rhyan Grant will miss next week's Melbourne Victory clash after receiving his fifth yellow of the season, the 25-year-old lucky not to have been sent off 17 minutes in for a dangerous sliding tackle.
Grant had both feet in the air when his studs skimmed the top of the ball and rammed into Carrusca's shin.
The challenge drew only a yellow card from referee Shaun Evans.
If that was unfair to Adelaide, Sydney picked up their own less than 10 minutes later.
Holosko, played through in the box by Milos Ninkovic, drew out Eugene Galekovic and nutmegged the Reds' goalkeeper.
But, just as the Slovakian winger began celebrating, the offside flag went up, despite replays showing he had been marginally onside.
Apart from that, the Sky Blues rarely tested Adelaide, who had few chances but, at times, found dangerous areas -- Galekovic was also quick to save a would-be Dylan McGowan own-goal.
As Sydney appeared heading for a second frustrating stalemate in as many weeks, the shackles came off just before the hour mark.
Grant was played into space on the right flank and looped a ball over in anticipation of the onrushing Brosque.
The skipper timed his run perfectly to put a left-foot first-time volley wide of Galekovic for his ninth goal of the campaign.
The Reds' defence had been solid up until that point, but they were caught out again two minutes later when Ninkovic doubled the lead.
A sea of red shirts appeared in no hurry to clear a throw-in and, amid a frantic goal-mouth scramble, the Serbian playmaker struck with authority for the winning lead.
