Plymouth to start 2017 top of League Two after seeing off Crawley

Plymouth will end 2016 as League Two leaders after taking advantage of Doncaster's slip-up with a 2-0 win over Crawley.Derek Adams' side knew victory would take them top after Doncaster could only manage a draw at Mansfield and they did not pass up the chance.Oscar Threlkeld put the promotion chasers in front on 69 minutes before half-time substitute Craig Tanner wrapped up the three points deep into injury time. The first half was a stop-start affair with little goalmouth action.Argyle had a lucky let-off in the 45th minute as Gary Miller gave the ball away and Enzio Boldewijn sent away James Collins, who looped the ball over the advancing Luke McCormick and the crossbar.Just before the hour mark playmaker Graham Carey's 20-yard stinger sent Crawley goalkeeper Glenn Morris full stretch.Seconds later Tanner tried his luck with a scissors kick from the right but Morris was equal to the effort. Plymouth got the breakthrough when Crawley failed to clear their lines following a shot at goal and Threlkeld followed in to send a perfectly placed side-footed shot into the far corner.Tanner sealed Plymouth's success in stoppage time after being teed up by Jake Jervis as the duo broke at pace with Town caught on the counter.
