Sydney FC up to second in A-League but suffer Mierzejewski injury setback
Sydney FC's 3-2 win over Wellington Phoenix on Sunday may have come at a price, with star winger Adrian Mierzejewski a serious doubt for next weekend's Sydney derby after suffering a hamstring injury.
Bobo struck twice, with Michael Zullo scoring his first A-League goal since 2008, as Sydney climbed to second in the table but saw Mierzejewski limp from the pitch in the second half.
A nondescript opening half an hour had brought few chances, but the game burst into life when Milos Ninkovic found Alex Brosque, the skipper feeding a pass for Bobo to ram home.
Six minutes later, Sydney had another when Mierzejewski crossed for Zullo to fire into the corner.
But with a minute remaining until the break, Andrija Kaluderovic put Phonix back into the match with a neat finish.
After the break, Bobo headed home Luke Wilkshire's inch-perfect cross to make it three, but coach Graham Arnold's cheer was soon replaced with concern when Mierzejewski pulled up injured.
The stress was compounded when Dario Vidosic made it 3-2 on the hour.
Sydney's chance to overtake leaders Melbourne City on goal difference was thwarted when an on-rushing David Carney was ruled offside despite the ball rebounding off a Phoenix player.
Sydney coach Graham Arnold said he was proud of his side's third win in a week but added: "We were good with the ball -- we should have buried it before halftime.
"But we got stretched too much and we kept them in the game."
Phoenix coach Darije Kalezic said his team shown determination and he was "happy with how they fight from the first to the last minute."
