Clinical Western Sydney Wanderers stun Adelaide United

An inspired Western Sydney Wanderers stunned fourth-placed Adelaide United with a 3-1 A-League victory at Coopers Stadium on Saturday.

The visitors, who absorbed a fair amount of pressure in both halves from the home side, were clinical going forward.

Roly Bonevacia was the Wanderers' best player, setting up the opener, scoring the second and supplying the assist for the third.

Adelaide enjoyed decent spells of possession and territory but barely threatened.

Western Sydney made the perfect start, breaking the deadlock on 12 minutes thanks to a neat header from Oriol Riera, who met a Bonevacia free kick.

A minute later, Adelaide were awarded a penalty after the intervention of VAR when Jordy Thomassen was clipped by Brendan Hamill but Craig Goodwin had his spot kick saved by Vedran Janjetovic.

The Reds wasted another opportunity to equalise just after the half hour when Mirko Boland and George Blackwood got in each other's way.

But they drew level just before the interval when Ryan Kitto powered home a volley from inside the area.

Western Sydney regained the lead in the 54th minute when Bonevacia's strike took a wicked deflection beyond goalkeeper Paul Izzo.

The Wanderers sealed their fourth win of the season in the 71st minute when Bonevacia turned provider for Abraham Majok, who latched on to his lobbed pass and lift the ball over Izzo.

Wanderers coach Markus Babbel said: "I'm very proud, because you see how many young guys were playing today. So it was a great win because it's not easy to win here."

Opposite number Marco Kurz said the Wanderers were deserved winners, adding: "The result is correct because Western Sydney was the better team.

"But I'm disappointed because, when I saw how we conceded the goals, it was too easy."
