Ikonomidis strikes again as Perth Glory cruise past Wellington Phoenix
Chris Ikonomidis continued his golden run of form as Perth Glory recorded a dominant 3-0 win over Wellington Phoenix in the A-League at HBF Park.
Ikonomidis had scored six goals in nine matches for Glory before departing for the Asian Cup, where he was a shining light during the Socceroos' doomed campaign.
The 23-year-old slotted straight back into Glory's lineup against Phoenix and combined brilliantly with fellow attackers Diego Castro and Andy Keogh to send Perth on their way.
First-half headers by Shane Lowry and Ikonomidis gave Glory a 2-0 lead before Keogh added the third with a 64th-minute strike.
Glory could have finished the match with five goals to their name, while they racked up a fourth clean sheet in a row for the first time in their history.
The win maintained their four-point lead at the top of the table, while the Phoenix are 14 points further back in sixth spot.
But Glory were lucky not to go behind in the second minute after a horror pass from goalkeeper Liam Reddy, David Williams seeing his first shot blocked by Matthew Spiranovic before his second hit the post.
The rest of the half belonged to Glory, Ivan Franjic, Castro, and Keogh all denied by keeper Filip Kurto.
Lowry opened the scoring in the 19th minute with a bullet header, Ikonomidis doubling the lead in the 35th minute when he nodded home after Kurto had saved a Castro thunderbolt.
Ikonomidis was denied a double when his 62nd-minute strike hit the crossbar and bounced out before Keogh's low drive evaded Kurto.
