Western Sydney held to goalless draw by Brisbane Roar
Western Sydney returned to the top of the A-League, but dropped their first points of the season in a 0-0 home draw against a spirited Brisbane on Saturday.
Like Sydney last week, winless Roar would have left Bankwest Stadium wondering how they failed to score and have just one goal to show from three games. .
Wanderers goalkeeper Daniel Lopar pulled off three saves in each half to help preserve a point for Wanderers, who were more of an attacking presence than in last week's rearguard effort, but at times looked listless.
"A bit disappointing, to be honest, I thought we should have played a lot better," Wanderers' captain Mitch Duke said.
Brisbane had seven shots to four in the first half with Wanderers not creating a decent shooting opportunity for half an hour.
Wanderers suffered a blow early in the game with their Swiss international midfielder Pirmin Schwegler coming off the field in the 18th minute with a calf issue.
Lopar kept Roar at bay in the early stages. He saved shots from Roy O'Donovan, James O'Shea and Brad Inman, who had another attempt blocked by Kwame Yeboah.
Roar goalkeeper Maxime Crocombe was called into action late in the first half, denying both Daniel Georgievski and Alex Meier, as Wanderers finally generated some momentum.
Brisbane started the second half like the first, creating three good chances in the space of a few seconds.
A Macauley Gillesphey effort was cleared off the line by Meier, Lopar made a follow up save and O'Donovan glanced a header wide and a few minutes later had another header saved.
German international Nicolai Muller was introduced for his Wanderers debut on the hour and within two minutes his corner was headed by compatriot Meier, who forced a save from Crocombe.
Keanu Baccus shot narrowly wide in the 68th minute after Roar only partially cleared another Muller corner
Meier squandered a good chance in added time, shooting straight at Crocombe.
