ISL 2021-22: Hyderabad grab late draw vs ATK Mohun Bagan, go top of the league
David Williams scored the fastest goal in the Hero Indian Super League's history but Javier Siverio's late header ensured Hyderabad FC moved to the top of the table after an action-packed 2-2 draw against ATK Mohun Bagan at the Fatorda on Wednesday.
Williams, playing ahead of a benched Roy Krishna, took just 12 seconds to score before Bartholomew Ogbeche continued his goalscoring spree with an equaliser in the 18th minute. An own goal from Asish Rai (64th) gave Bagan hopes of going top of the league before substitute Siverio flicked a superb header into the goal to equalise.
The result sees Hyderabad edge past Mumbai City FC on goal difference. Both teams have 16 points from nine games, but Hyderabad have a GD of 11 as opposed to Mumbai's 5. ATK Mohun Bagan, meanwhile, moved to third with 15 points from nine outings.
The match started in stunning fashion. Bagan took a 1-0 lead inside 12 seconds, Williams smashing in this record goal with a powerful strike from outside the box that went in despite Hyderabad keeper Laxmikant Kattimani getting his gloves to it. The move came after seven passes, all one-touch, all straight from kick off.
The experienced Kattimani could have done better but at the other end, Amrinder Singh committed an even worse blunder in the 18th minute when he failed to hold on to a simple catch and the ball fell to Ogbeche. The in-form striker made no mistake, calmly passing the ball into an open net to notch up his ninth goal of the campaign.
Amrinder made another massive blunder a few minutes later when he passed the ball straight to Ogbeche but the striker could not make the most of it and passed a meek shot straight back to the Bagan keeper.
Bagan then suffered a setback when Carl McHugh had to be replaced just on the cusp of halftime after the Irish midfielder suffered a concussion and had to be taken off the field in an ambulance. A few moments after that Boumous picked up his fourth yellow card of the season after getting into a tangle with Asish Rai who was also cautioned. Boumous will now miss the next game.
The second half saw Hyderabad put up a solid defensive display until Williams dribbled past Akash Mishra and crossed for Joni Kauko who nodded in an excellent header toward the far post that took a slight deflection from Asish Rai and gave Kattimani no chance. The goal was adjudged as an own goal by Rai.
Having taken the lead for the second time in the game, Bagan kept pushing for that insurance goal and Liston Colaco came close to scoring from a crisp Williams reverse pass. Just when it looked like Bagan had done enough, though, substitute Siverio nipped in with a powerful, twisting header from a loopy cross from midfield.
