Leicy Santos scores in her NWSL debut for the Spirit

Leicy Santos scores and records an assist in her NWSL debut to help the Spirit take down the Current.

The Washington Spirit, led by Paige Metayer and Ouleymata Sarr, secured a commanding 4-1 win over the Kansas City Current at Audi Field on Sunday.

Metayer opened the scoring in the ninth minute with a left-footed shot from the center of the box, assisted by Leicy Santos. Just five minutes later, Sarr doubled Washington's lead with a right-footed strike from close range following an assist from Croix Bethune.

Trinity Rodman added to Washington's tally early in the second half with a stunning left-footed shot into the top left corner after receiving a pass from Metayer. Despite conceding one goal after Temwa Chawinga scored for Kansas City in the 64th minute off an assist by Debinha, Washington quickly responded.

Santos sealed the game for the Spirit, netting their fourth goal in the 73rd minute after being set up by Gabrielle Carle during a set piece situation.

Kansas City's efforts were hampered further as Vanessa DiBernardo and Alana Cook received yellow cards for bad fouls. Substitutions saw Nichelle Prince and Mwanalima Jereko come on for Kansas City but they couldn't turn around their fortunes.

The match also saw several substitutions for Washington: Heather Stainbrook replaced Hal Hershfelt, Carle came on for Casey Krueger, Rosemonde Kouassi substituted Bethune, Ashley Hatch took over from Santos and Brittany Ratcliffe replaced Rodman late in play.
