Man Utd win at Juventus but settle for UWCL playoff

Jess Park fired a first-half winner as Manchester United beat Juventus 1-0 in Turin in their final Women's Champions League group game to finish sixth in the table.

Marc Skinner's side were already assured a playoff place for the knockout round and Park's first goal in Europe sealed them a more favourable tie when the draw takes place at 12 p.m.UK time on Friday.

A top-four finish was still attainable before the final round of group matches, but results elsewhere ensured a two-legged playoff for United, in their first season in the Champions League's main group phase.

Juventus, who had not won any of their previous six Champions League ties against English sides, were first to threaten when Amalie Vangsgaard's low shot was well saved by United goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce.

But United stole into an 18th-minute lead when Park finished off neat buildup by curling a superb shot into the top corner from just inside the penalty area.

United dominated the first half. Juve goalkeeper Pauline Peyraud-Magnin's fine low save kept out Melvine Malard's effort from the edge of the area and Park's shot was deflected wide after a fine run from inside her own half.

Maya Le Tissier's last-gasp tackle on Cristiana Girelli early in the second half spared United after sloppy play at the back as both sides struggled to carve out scoring chances.

United were left furious when VAR decided not to intervene after the referee failed to award them a penalty for Juve captain Cecilia Salvai's reckless challenge on Elisabeth Terland in the closing stages, but the visitors saw the game out without further incident.
