Captain Rodman scores in USWNT friendly rout of Paraguay

Trinity Rodman capped a memorable week with a goal in her first game captaining her country as the United States women's national team put on a second-half show to rout Paraguay 6-0 in Saturday's friendly in Carson, California.

Rodman scored the fourth goal for the USWNT in the 56th minute, one of five times Emma Hayes' side found the net in the second half. Ally Sentnor scored twice and Emma Sears capped the scoring in the 72nd minute, while there was also an own goal from Paraguay's Fiorella Martínez.

The U.S. broke the deadlock in first-half stoppage time through a debut goal from Portland Thorns forward Reilyn Turner.

All eyes, though, were on Rodman. The star forward was not only leading out the USWNT for the first time but she was doing so just two days after signing a record-breaking contract to stay with the Washington Spirit for the next three years.

The new deal ended months of speculation over the 23-year-old's future amid big-money offers from Europe and debates over the sustainability of the NWSL salary cap.

Rodman was making her first appearance for the USWNT since a friendly with Brazil in 2025, in which Rodman also scored.

It was Rodman's 12th international goal in her 48th appearance, and she celebrated with a dance for the U.S. bench.

"I just think it's important to show your personality and on the field, you have to differentiate yourself somehow," Rodman told TNT Sports. "We're all doing the exact same thing on the field.

"I think that's just another way to connect with the fans as well. Like, you show that fun personality, that joy, it brings a smile to everybody else's face. I'm sure I made a lot of people laugh, and then all the little kids that are on TikTok seeing that dance, just it just brings everybody together. I think it's important."

It was the first of two matches for the U.S. team to conclude its January training camp. The United States also plays Chile in Santa Barbara on Tuesday night.

European-based U.S. players were not included in the camp because they are in the midst of their seasons. Gotham players were also left off the roster as they prepare for the final stage of the first Women's Champions Cup in London next week.

The team honored retired forward Christen Press before the match. Press won Women's World Cup titles with the United States in 2015 and 2019 and a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. Over a decade with the national team, she appeared in 155 matches, scoring 64 goals and 43 assists.

Press, who formally retired from professional soccer in October, was among the national team players who fought for equal pay and also advocated for better pay and playing conditions in the NWSL.
