Western Carolina gets first victory, 76-57 over Hiwassee
CULLOWHEE, N.C. -- Devin Peterson scored 15 points with six rebounds, six assists and four steals and Western Carolina picked up its first victory of the season, winning its home opener against Hiwassee 76-57 on Wednesday night.
Junior Marc Gosselin posted his first double-double this season and the fifth of his career with 13 points and 10 rebounds along with two blocks. Deriece Parks added 12 points and Matt Halvorsen 11 for the Catamounts (1-2), who were coming off losses to Clemson and Cincinnati.
Dess Culpepper scored 12 points and Tevin Henry added 10 for the Tigers, a National Christian Collegiate Athletic Association program.
Hiwassee outshot Western Carolina by almost 10 percent but the Tigers turned the ball over 22 times to just seven for the Catamounts and Western Carolina dominated the boards 54-37, including 27 offensive rebounds.
The game was tied at 52 with 7:20 left before the Catamounts finished by outscoring the Tigers 24-5.
