Tennessee Tech edges Tennessee State 87-81 in overtime
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Curtis Phillips Jr. scored a career-high 28 points, Shaq Calhoun added 23 more, including a 3-pointer to force overtime, and Tennessee Tech slipped past Tennessee State for an 87-81 win Saturday.
In overtime, Aleksa Jugovic got a 3-point play to put Tennessee Tech on top 78-76 and the Golden Eagles hung on, holding Tennessee State to just four points over the final two minutes. Jugovic got seven of his 17 points in the extra period.
Tennessee Tech (11-6, 3-1 Ohio Valley Conference) trailed by three at the break but stayed close and tied the score at 73 with 11 seconds remaining in regulation on Calhoun's sixth 3-pointer of the game, giving him a career-best 23 points. Tennessee State's Armani Chaney missed a shot at the end of regulation.
Courtney Alexander II had 11 rebounds for the Golden Eagles.
Tennessee State (6-9, 1-3) got 20 points apiece from Christian Mekowulu and Delano Spencer. Darreon Reddick added 17 points for the Tigers, who have lost six of their past seven games.
