Welage scores 30 as San Jose romps to season-opening win
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Ryan Welage went off for a career high 30 points and Jalen James added 15 as San Jose State cruised to a 97-45 season-opening win against Antelope Valley on Friday night.
Welage had the hot hand, making 10 of 12 field goals -- 3-for-3 from long range -- and sank seven of eight free throws in just 22 minutes. James was also 3-for-3 from 3-point range and the Spartans were 9 of 18 as a team.
Sheldon Blackwell scored 13 points to lead the Marauders, who compete in the California Community College Athletic Association. Antelope Valley was held to 25 percent shooting and connected on just three of 21 3-point tries. San Jose State dished 30 assists to Antelope Valley's eight and held a 51-33 edge in rebounds.
Isaiah Nichols led the Spartans with nine rebounds and six assists.
