South Carolina State rallies past Maryland-Eastern Shore
ORANGEBURG, S.C. -- Damani Applewhite and Janai Rayner-Powell had 13 points each and South Carolina State beat Maryland-Eastern Shore 66-62 for its third straight win on Monday night.
Patrell Rogers added 11 points for the Bulldogs (7-12, 3-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference), who trailed most of the second half but ended the game on a 6-0 run to surge in front. Applewhite had a dunk to tie it at 62-all with 1:52 left, Ian Kinard's layup gave the Bulldogs the lead for good at 64-62 at 41 seconds and Rayner-Powell added a pair of foul shots to ice it with nine seconds left.
South Carolina State trailed by as many as 13 early in the second period and chipped away at the deficit until taking its first lead of the half at 58-56 on Rogers' 3-point play with 4:09 left.
Ahmad Frost answered with a 4-point play for UMES (5-15, 1-4) to lead 60-58, Cameron Bacote's jumper at the 3-minute mark made it 62-60 but that was the last points the Hawks would score.
Frost led the Hawks with 16 points, Logan McIntosh scored 13 and Bacote 10.
