UNC downs The Citadel 72-58, heads to SoCon semifinal
ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- Demetrius Troy scored 14 points with four 3-pointers, James Dickey added 13 points with 10 rebounds, and top-seeded UNC Greensboro beat No. 8 seed The Citadel 72-58 on Saturday to advance to the Southern Conference Tournament semifinals.
Francis Alonso added 12 points and Marvin Smith and Isaiah Miller scored 10 points apiece for the outright SoCon champion Spartans (25-7), who will face the winner between No. 4 Mercer and No. 5 Wofford in Sunday's first semifinal.
The Bulldogs led 36-32 on Frankie Johnson's 3, but James Dickey's layup sparked a 12-0 run for a 44-36 Spartans' lead. UNCG led by 10 but Leandro Allende's fast-break dunk off a Kaiden Rice steal cut it to 66-58 with 1:03 left. Jordy Kuiper and Alonso combined for six free throws from there.
Zane Najdawi scored 17 points with four 3s, Allende added 12 and Matt Frierson 10 for The Citadel (11-21), which hit 11 3s but shot 35 percent from the field.
