Burns proves big in critical times; Colgate downs American

HAMILTON, N.Y. -- Jordan Burns scored 18 points with 10 assists and six rebounds and Colgate beat American 73-69 on Sunday.

Sa'eed Nelson put American up 68-67 with 67 seconds left. Following a Colgate timeout, Burns buried a pullup jumper with 46 seconds left and the Raiders (9-6, 1-1 Patriot League) led the rest of the way. Mark Gasperini missed with 23 seconds left and Marvin Bragg missed on a 3-point shot attempt with eight seconds left. Jordan made a pair of foul shots for a 71-68 lead.

American led 35-29 at halftime on 52 percent (13 of 25) shooting including 7 of 13 from 3-point range. Colgate used a 12-4 run to start the second half with Burns scoring seven for a 41-39 lead. Jack Ferguson, Will Rayman and Tucker Richardson each scored 11 for Colgate, which only led for 11 minutes of the game.

Nelson led American with 18 points, Stacy Beckton Jr. 17, Sam Iorio 13 and Gasperini 10 for American (7-6, 1-1).
