No. 19 Green Bay women win 30th straight league opener 58-51
DAYTON, Ohio -- Jessica Lindstrom had a double-double and Jen Wellnitz had 11 points, including the clinching 3-point play with 17.3 seconds left, to rally No. 19 Green Bay to a 58-51 win over Wright State to open Horizon League play on Thursday.
Lindstrom had 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Phoenix (11-1), who have won six straight. Allie Wright also had 15 points, including the go-ahead layup with 4:13 to play.
Green Bay has won 30-straight conference opening games but the Raiders (9-4) made this one tough on the league favorites. Down 23-20 at the half, Wright State, picked to finish second in the league, scored 19 points in the third quarter to go up by two. That is tied for the third-most points the Phoenix allowed in a quarter this year -- and the ones with more came in a garbage-time blowout and 24 to No. 4 Mississippi State.
LeClaire assisted a Caitlyn Hibner layup with 35.8 seconds to go for a 53-48 lead. The Raiders quickly down a deep, banked 3-pointer from Breaunna Lloyd. But when they tried it again after Karly Murphy's free throws made it 55-51 with 24.5 to go, Willnitz jumped into the play for a breakaway layup and free throw.
Chelsea Welch scored 22 points for the Raiders.
