Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott, in Las Vegas this past weekend for a music festival, ran into a bit of trouble with security.
TMZ Sports posted video showing Elliott arguing with his girlfriend in a parking lot early Sunday morning. In the video, he is also seen talking to members of the event staff, confronting one of them and using his body to shove the man backward until the man hit a gate. Then Elliott is seen using his forearm to push the man, who fell over.
Police officer Laura Meltzer said Monday that the 23-year-old running back was detained briefly early Sunday during the Electric Daisy Carnival at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. He was handcuffed by police when he was detained but not arrested.
"The security guard who was the victim of the misdemeanor battery refused to press charges,'' Meltzer said in a statement.
Elliott's attorney, Frank Salzano, told TMZ that Elliott was released shortly after the incident.
Salzano reiterated his comment to ESPN's Todd Archer, calling it "an overreaction by security."
A league source told ESPN's Adam Schefter in a text that the NFL is "still gathering information," but the individual doesn't "think it's a big deal," and added, "looks like he was pushed and punch wasn't thrown."
Elliott served a six-game suspension in 2017 for violations of the league's personal conduct policy. He had been accused of domestic violence by his former girlfriend.
Cowboys vice president Stephen Jones said later Monday that the incident will not impact the potential negotiations for a long-term contract for the running back.
"We are aware of it, gathering information, but what we are aware of was that he wasn't arrested, hasn't been charged, so we'll just continue to gather information," Jones said at the opening of the GameStop Performance Center at The Star that will serve as headquarters for Complexity, an esports organization. "That's really all that we can say at this time."
Jones said the Cowboys "have nothing but respect for Zeke" and that it would be unfair to comment on what happened without knowing more. He said he has yet to speak directly with Elliott.
The Cowboys have had discussions with Elliott's agent regarding an extension but are not fully involved in negotiations. The Cowboys recently picked up the fifth-year option on Elliott's contract for 2020 at a cost of $9.09 million.
