LONDON, March 11 - An equaliser by substitute Nathan Ellington kept West Bromwich Albion just above the Premier League relegation zone after a 1-1 draw at fellow strugglers Birmingham City on Saturday.

West Brom missed a string of first-half chances in the Midlands derby and looked set to pay a high price when City's Finnish striker Mikael Forssell converted a 49th minute penalty.

A double substitution by West Brom manager Bryan Robson paid dividends when the newcomers delivered an equaliser within two minutes - Nwankwo Kanu providing the pass and Ellington the finish in the 70th minute.

The draw means West Brom stay 17th in the table on 27 points, three points above City, who have a game in hand, and well clear of Portsmouth (18) and Sunderland (10).
