New York Red Bulls top Sporting Kansas City, playoff rematch looms

KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- Bradley Wright-Phillips tied the MLS season goal record, and the New York Red Bulls beat Sporting Kansas City 2-0 in the league's regular-season finale Sunday night.

With his 26th and 27th goals, Wright-Phillips joined Chris Wondolowski (2012) and Roy Lassiter (1996) atop the list.

The Red Bulls (13-10-11, 50 points) also overtook Sporting KC for the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference. Sporting KC (14-13-7, 49 points) dropped to the fifth spot and will visit the Red Bulls for an immediate rematch in the knockout round Thursday night.

Wright-Phillips scored his record-tying goal in the 70th minute. After battling defender Aurelien Collin to win a loose ball, Wright-Phillips dribbled to the middle of the box and cut a right-footed shot back into the left corner of the net.

Wright-Phillips finished Eric Alexander's pass to open the scoring in the 15th minute.
