DC United and Sporting Kansas City battle to 0-0 draw
WASHINGTON -- Bill Hamid had his MLS-leading 10th shutout of the season to help D.C. United clinch a playoff spot with a 0-0 draw with Sporting Kansas City on a rainy Friday night.
D.C. United (15-9-7) advanced to the playoffs a year after finishing with a MLS-worst record of 3-24-7. The tie snapped their home winning streak at five games.
United was held scoreless for the third time in five matches. Fabian Espindola had a breakaway shot roll just wide in the 58th minute and Luis Silva's free kick from just outside the 18-yard box sailed wide in the 71st.
Second-place Kansas City (13-11-7) sits six points back in the Eastern Conference. C.J. Sapong's lunging header in the 76th minute forced a diving save by Hamid.
Hamid is one clean sheet away from tying the club record of 11 set by Nick Rimando in 2005.
