Bastia 0-2 Lorient

Lorient ended a four-game Ligue 1 losing streak as a couple of second-half goals saw them secure a 2-0 victory at Bastia. After a goalless first half, Lorient took the lead shortly after the restart when a Jordan Ayew volley was deflected into his own goal by Bastia defender Mathieu Peybernes. The visitors then doubled their lead when Gilles Sunu capped off a fine counter-attack by powering a fizzing shot past Bastia goalkeeper Alphonse Areola. The much-needed victory saw Sylvain Ripoll's Lorient rise five places in the standings to 13th ahead of the international break, while Claude Makelele's Bastia remained 17th.Neither side could stamp their authority on a first half devoid of quality and clear-cut chances. The tentative mood was of no real surprise, given that Bastia had not won in their last five league encounters and Lorient had suffered a disappointing defeat to fellow strugglers Evian in their last league encounter. However, a lack of goal-scoring opportunities in the first half at the Stade Armand Cesari was somewhat astonishing given that the two defences are among the leakiest in Ligue 1 - with both conceding 11 goals in their opening eight Ligue 1 games. The standard of football did get better after the interval and Lorient took the lead three minutes into the second half when Ayew's shot was deflected into his own net by centre-back Peybernes. Yann Jouffre found a burst of speed down the right wing and he crossed to the far post where Ayew unleashed a fierce volley that diverted off Peybernes' midriff and past a wrong-footed Alphonse Areola in the home goal.Lorient side doubled their advantage just after the hour mark when Sunu finished off a fine counter-attack move. With Peybernes for company, the 23-year-old striker feigned to shoot to create the necessary space and despatched past the helpless Areola to seal all three points for Lorient. ends
