Gladbach held to goalless draw with Eintracht Frankfurt
Borussia Monchengladbach failed to take their first match point in the race for a place in the Champions League after being held to a goalless draw at Eintracht Frankurt.
A win for the Foals would have given them a chance to wrap up their place in Europe's elite club competition as early as this weekend, but in the end they were fortunate to come away with a draw which leaves them just three points clear of fourth-placed Bayer Leverkusen, who are in action on Saturday.
Frankfurt created more but wasted more too as they missed an opportunity of moving above Hoffenheim into seventh place.
Frankfurt made their intentions clear early on, getting at Gladbach early and preventing them from getting into a rhythm.
The first chances still fell Gladbach's way, though, with Max Kruse setting up Patrick Herrmann, whose first shot was saved before he sent the rebound over.
Kruse was proving to be the visitors' biggest danger on the counter-attack, but Frankfurt were looking equally if not more dangerous when they turned defence into attack.
Haris Seferovic should have done better with a shot he sent wide of the target before the break while Stefan Aigner wasted an even better opportunity just after.
Frankfurt raised the pressure as Gladbach retreated, but they could not find a way through.
In the end, they almost risked losing as Thorgan Hazard wasted Gladbach's best chance of the game, deep into stoppage time, with Frankfurt goalkeeper Kevin Trapp earning the hosts a point they will feel should have been three.
