Fin Bartels grabs winner as Borussia Dortmund slump to defeat at Werder Bremen

Werder Bremen piled the misery on Jurgen Klopp's Borussia Dortmund with a 2-1 win at the Weserstadion on Saturday.

Davie Selke put the hosts in front, with Fin Bartels adding a second before Mats Hummels grabbed a consolation for the Westphalians, who completed their worst-ever first half of a season with just 15 points and a total of 10 defeats.

Victory moved Bremen off the foot of the Bundesliga table and above their visitors, who are second bottom and face a battle to avoid relegation when they resume their campaign in January.

Bremen needed a win to lift themselves off the bottom, and Dortmund found themselves chasing the game after just two minutes.

Selke, Bremen's 19-year-old forward in a youthful attack alongside 20-year-old Melvyn Lorenzen, put the hosts in front with a cool finish, curling his effort beyond Mitchell Langerak.

Dortmund had scored five goals on each of their last two visits to the Weserstadion but, for all their efforts, it did not look as though they were going to get one here as Bremen defended well, seeking Selke and Lorenzen with quick passes forward.

One of those was charged down by Langerak, who only just managed to get to the ball ahead of Lorenzen five minutes before the break.

Dortmund made most of the running in the second half, but Bremen were more effective, with Selke bursting down the right and sending in an inviting cross which Bartels turned in from close range to double the hosts' advantage.

Selke side-footed another good chance wide before Hummels pulled a goal back for Dortmund in the 69th minute when he headed in from a corner after freeing himself from the attentions of Theodor Gebre Selassie.

They had 20 minutes to find an equalizer, but Shinji Kagawa sent the best chance skywards as the pressure mounted on Klopp, whose side will spend the winter break at the foot of the table should Freiburg beat Hannover on Sunday.
