Fiorentina fall at home to Dinamo Minsk in Europa group stage finale
Dinamo Minsk ended their Europa League campaign by defeating previously unbeaten Fiorentina 2-1 in Florence on Thursday.
The Belarus outfit had taken just one point from their opening five games and had no chance of progressing but nevertheless signed off from the competition with an impressive display against the Group K winners.
The victory was also the first time a Belarusian side had beated Italian opposition
Sergei Kontsevoi put the visitors ahead before the interval and Nemanja Nikolic doubled Dinamo's lead 10 minutes into the second half.
Fiorentina striker Marco Marin gave his team an 88th-minute lifeline but the visitors held on for their first win in the group stages.
With first place already secured heading into tonight's match, it was no surprise Fiorentina coach Vincenzo Montella made eight changes to the side that held Serie A leaders Juventus to a goalless draw last Friday.
Mario Gomez, who started against Juve, had the first chance of the game in the 16th minute.
The German forward got behind Juan Vargas' cross and his six-yard attempt was saved by Dinamo goalkeeper Aleksandr Gutor.
The visitors almost went ahead in the 21st minute.
Fiorentina goalkeeper Ciprian Tatarusanu kept out Nemanja Nikolic's bullet strike.
Nenad Adamovic was first to the rebound and he shot on target but was denied by a goal-line clearance from Fiorentina defender Nenad Tomovic.
The hosts suffered a blow midway through the first half with Simone Minelli replacing an injured Juan Guillermo Cuadrado.
Gutor was called on to make a save in the 36th minute to keep out Minelli's left-footed shot towards the near post.
Dinamo broke the deadlock three minutes later.
A distraction from the Fiorentina defence left Kontsevoi unmarked in the box and he controlled Igor Stasevichs' cross to strike the ball past a helpless Tatarusanu.
Dinamo picked up where they left off and were rewarded in the 55th minute.
A fast counter-attack saw Adamovic send Nikolic through on goal and his right-footed shot from the heart of the area beat Tatarusanu.
On the hour mark, Minelli's close-range header from Vargas' cross was saved by Gutor.
Fiorentina finally found a way through two minutes from time.
Minelli set up Marin in the heart of the area and he struck the ball past Gutor and into the back of the net.
Dinamo held on for victory.
The visitors finished the game with 10 men -- with defender Oleg Veretilo picking up his second yellow card deep into injury-time.
