JDT winning streak over after Kelantan stage comeback in MSL

Kelantan's late fightback ended the winning streak of reigning champions, JDT.

Kelantan ended Johor Darul Ta'zim's run of 12 successive wins with a 2-2 draw at the Sultan Mohammed IV Stadium on Friday evening, a result that knocks the Malaysia Super League (MSL) champions off pole position.

In one of the best games of the season so far, JDT took a 2-0 lead, thanks to a brace from Juan Martin Lucero, but the Red Warriors fought back in the second half to earn a point in front of a delirious crowd.

The comeback enabled Felda United to go a point clear of the champions with a 3-1 win at home to Selangor in the evening's other fixture.

Most excitement was up in Kota Bharu, however. It was a frantic opening few minutes played in an intense atmosphere.

JDT almost took the lead in the sixth minute. A low Safiq Rahim free-kick was deflected wickedly by Daudsu Jamaluddin. But, with the men in blue starting to celebrate, there was Khairul Fahmi to somehow change direction and tip the ball over the bar with a fantastic piece of athleticism.

It didn't matter because from the resulting corner, the visitors took the lead. Safiq's cross was headed goalwards by Marcos Antonio. The ball may or may not have crossed the line when it hit the inside of the far post but it rebounded into the net off the chest of the onrushing Lucero.

The champions continued to play the slicker football to silence the home fans and the hosts, Brendan Gan apart, struggled to find their fluency on the ball.

Immediately after the restart, Khairul was fast off his line to block a shot from Lucero who had been put through by countryman Jorge Pereyra Diaz.

In the 52nd minute, Lucero made amends. Azamuddin Akil's ball from deep sat up nicely on the edge of the area but there was still work for the South American to do. He took one touch and deftly lifted the ball over the Kelantan keeper. It was a classy finish and his best moment since joining the club just before the start of the season.

With another three points seemingly in Mario Gomez's bag, Kelantan pulled one back immediately in fine style.

JDT failed to close down a cross from the right and there was Indra Putra Mahayuddin to climb above the visiting defence to send a towering header past the despairing dive of Farizal Marlias. It was the first away goal the champions have conceded in the league all season.

It lit the touch paper at a packed stadium in Kota Bharu and belief surged through the men in red as they started to put serious pressure on the Southern Tigers.

Johor are made of stern stuff and in the 63rd minute, Marcos Antonio headed a corner against the top of the crossbar.

If the atmosphere was intense before, it exploded midway through the second period. Gan's left-foot curling cross from the right-side was delicious and bounced behind the JDT defence for Wan Zaharulnizam to connect at the far post with a dramatic diving header.

In the other big game of the day, Felda United secured a crucial 3-1 win at home to Selangor.

Hadin Azman got the goal after nine minutes only for Patrick Wleh to equalise just past the midway point of the second half. Soon after, however, Zah Rahan Krangar restored the hosts' lead and within three minutes Francis Doe sealed the win to put Felda top, a point above champions, JDT.
