Own goal sets Luton on way to victory over sorry Port Vale

Luton heaped further misery on Port Vale manager Michael Brown with a 2-0 win at Kenilworth Road on Tuesday evening.Defeat for the visitors meant they have now lost six league matches in a row, and the Valiants have also gone five games without a goal. The Hatters wasted a glorious chance on 12 minutes, Andrew Shinnie heading woefully wide from close range.Town had the lead on 38 minutes though due to a calamitous own goal from Ben Whitfield, who diverted Luke Berry's pass beyond his own goalkeeper from 15 yards.Whitfield then sent a volley over at the other end, before Anthony de Freitas' free-kick required a fine save from Marek Stech.Town extended their advantage on 50 minutes as Jack Stacey ran 60 yards before hammering into the roof of the net.David Worrall's 35-yard effort did not miss by much, while Pelly-Ruddock Mpanzu's blast was parried by Vale keeper Sam Hornby.Shinnie fired into the side-netting for Luton, with Stech tipping over De Freitas' header, the keeper then making a brilliant stop from Worrall late on to preserve his clean sheet.
