Carlisle secure comeback win at Port Vale

Carlisle came from behind to secure a 2-1 victory at Port Vale in Keith Curle's penultimate game as manager.Curle, who is leaving the club at the end of the season, saw second-half strikes from Ashley Nadesan and Hallam Hope cancel out Dior Angus' opener.After a slow start, Vale debutant Angus tapped in from a couple of yards out in the 34th minute after an initial effort was parried into the air by Carlisle stopper Jack Bonham.Minutes later the visitors were indebted to Bonham who pulled off a top save to keep out Tom Pope's header.The hosts were made to pay for that miss after the restart when the Cumbrians drew level through Nadesan.A cross was deflected into his path and he drilled a superb effort into the top corner.Carlisle then sprang in front on 70 minutes when substitute Hope, just four minutes after coming on, fired home Jamie Devitt's cross.To compound the hosts' misery, Anthony Kay was sent off with five minutes remaining.

Pope salvages a point for Port Vale to dent Mansfield play-off hopes

Mansfield Town's play-off hopes were rocked by a late Tom Pope equaliser as visiting Port Vale stole a 1-1 draw.The Stags had dominated and looked set to take the points thanks to an own goal by Kyle Howkins after 72 minutes.But Pope was on hand to head home from six yards from Dan Turner's cross from the right in a late sting in the tail.Mansfield had kept Vale keeper Sam Hornby busy all afternoon.But he was finally beaten as former Stags loanee Howkins could do little about a misdirected clearance from team-mate Charlie Raglan striking him and rolling over the line.Vale began the game on the front foot and veteran Michael Tongue was not too far over with an effort from 20 yards.But the home side found their feet and Hornby denied Alex MacDonald, Danny Rose and Mal Benning as a tight half ended goalless.Alfie Potter and Rose both wasted great chances to break the deadlock after the break, Potter scuffing wide from seven yards and Rose heading over from six yards.Those chances came back to haunt them when Pope struck his late blow.

Crawley return to winning ways

Crawley came from behind to beat Port Vale 2-1 and record their first victory in two months.Nathan Smith's own goal with eight minutes left moved the visitors to within eight points of the play-off places in League Two with four games left.Port Vale looked to have opened the scoring in the ninth minute when a Tom Pope header was somehow saved by Crawley goalkeeper Glenn Morris.However, Pope did open the scoring in the 20th minute when he turned in a low cross from James Gibbons.Vale were well on top until the 29th minute when referee Michael Jones adjudged Smith to have fouled Panutche Camara and pointed to the spot. The home players were furious with the officials but Joshua Payne made no mistake and levelled things up.The game seemed destined for a draw, with any sort of flow interrupted by a number of fouls and off-ball altercations. But the visitors secured all three points late on when the impressive Lewis Young made a brave foray into Port Vale's box and his perseverance paid off when his cross was turned into his own net by Smith.

Kirk nets late leveller as Crewe share spoils with derby rivals Port Vale

Charlie Kirk scored a stoppage-time leveller as Crewe shared derby honours with Port Vale after a thrilling 2-2 League Two draw.Antony Kay's 71st-minute long-range effort appeared to have won it for Vale as they came from behind after enduring the worst possible start when goalkeeper Ryan Boot gifted Crewe an opener through Ryan Wintle.Tom Pope levelled from the penalty spot before the break and Kay volleyed in before the late drama.The opener arrived as James Jones' free-kick slipped out of the grasp of young stopper Boot to present Wintle with a free header into an empty net in the seventh minute.Boot's confidence plummeted further when he spilled a routine cross and was injured in the process, while Vale boss Neil Aspin took the opportunity to replace him with Sam Hornby.Inexperience showed again when Vale drew level in the 36th minute with Newcastle United loanee Jamie Sterry guilty of a reckless challenge on Luke Hannant inside the box. Former Crewe striker Pope fired past Ben Garratt from the spot.Ben Whitfield forced a reaction save from Crewe keeper Garratt, while at the other end Hornby excelled when keeping out Wintle's effort on the stroke of half-time as the Crewe midfielder eyed up a second.After the break Jordan Bowery blazed over with the goal at his mercy. But Kay's connection was sweet when the veteran midfielder dispatched home a half volley from 30 yards out with less than 20 minutes remaining.Crewe responded and Hornby did well to keep out Paul Green's volley and Eddie Nolan's late effort, but the hosts were not to be denied and substitute Harry McKirdy squared the ball for Kirk to fire home and seal a late point.
