Chances go begging as Newport and Wycombe share stalemate

Newport and Wycombe paid the price for missed opportunities as they played out a 0-0 draw at Rodney Parade.Exiles striker Padraig Amond wasted a host of chances while Craig Mackail-Smith should have made it four wins from six for Wycombe.Amond had a pair of opportunities to put Newport ahead in the opening 10 minutes.Wycombe goalkeeper Scott Brown pushed the ball into his path after League Two player of the month Frank Nouble battled his way down the left flank, but Amond failed to make a solid contact.Brown then misjudged a Dan Butler cross but Amond could not find the target with his header.Luke O'Nien stung the hands of Newport goalkeeper Joe Day with a curling effort, before Amond and substitute Reece Cole had late first-half chances but failed to convert them.The Chairboys could have snatched the lead against the run of play after the break but Day came to the rescue to keep out a Josh Umerah header and a close-range effort from Mackail-Smith.Mackail-Smith had the best chance to open the scoring after 63 minutes but he failed to hit the target from eight yards after Umerah had found him in acres of space.Newport captain David Pipe then made a goal-line clearance to salvage a point for the hosts.
