Sutter's stoppage-time header rescues draw for Lions vs. Revolution
Scott Sutter's stoppage-time header allowed Orlando City to rescue a point in a 3-3 draw with the New England Revolution on Saturday night at Orlando City Stadium.
Down a goal in the match's dying seconds, a Yoshimar Yotún free kick from 35 yards connected with Sutter's head and bounced just past Revolution goalkeeper Matt Turner at the near post for the equalizing score.
Two early defensive mistakes from the Lions gave New England (7-7-8, 29 points) a 2-0 lead after just 18 minutes. Off a corner throw-in from Brandon Bye in the seventh minute, both Orlando City goalkeeper Earl Edwards Jr. and defender Amro Tarek weren't able to guard the near post, allowing a Juan Agudelo header to sneak into the net.
Another miscue came in the 17th minute, when Lions defender Shane O'Neill couldn't collect a pass. The turnover led to Cristian Penilla getting a clear run into the box, and the New England forward converted his ninth goal of the season.
Orlando City (7-14-2, 23 points) took a goal back just before halftime, courtesy of forward Dominic Dwyer. The Lions then took advantage of a New England mistake in the 71st minute, as a header from Tarek off a free kick deflected off the post and off Turner's hands into the net. The somewhat fortunate bounce was Tarek's first goal in Major League Soccer.
New England top scorer Teal Bunbury came off the bench for the first time this season, and scored just two minutes after his entrance in the 76th minute. Bunbury took a pass in the Orlando City box, then made a nice move to split two defenders and get a decisive strike on net for his 11th goal of the season.
A late-game fracas between the two sides after the equalizer resulted in a red card for Yotun, who will now be suspended for the Lions' next match.
While both clubs leave with a point, New England is winless in its last five matches and Orlando City winless in its last four.
Bolivian international Cristhian Machado made his debut in a New England jersey, coming into the game as a substitute in the 87th minute.
