Sounders last winless MLS team as Graham Zusi salvages draw for Sporting KC
The Seattle Sounders are the only MLS team yet to earn a win this season after Sporting Kansas City salvaged a 2-2 draw at home in freezing temperatures on Sunday.
The Sounders are among the league's most popular teams, finishing second in attendance behind expansion Atlanta United last year, but opened the season with three straight scoreless defeats while splitting their focus with the CONCACAF Champions League.
And though Seattle finally earned a point in MLS, it is the last team still looking for a win after D.C. United and the Portland Timbers both secured their first victories on Saturday.
Sporting KC took the lead in the 34th minute as Ilie Sanchez converted a penalty after Nouhou Tolo fouled Johnny Russell.
Will Bruin finally scored Seattle's first goal of the season in the third minute of first-half stoppage time. Nicolas Lodeiro's long throw-in was headed by Chad Marshall on the left side of the box to Bruin, who tapped it in with the outside of his foot from point-blank range.
Christian Roldan then gave the Sounders a 2-1 lead in the 73rd minute with a low one-timer from the top of the box off a feed from Bruin.
But five minutes later, Zusi slipped behind the defense and ran onto a long well-played ball from Jimmy Medranda before chipping it over a sliding defender and goalkeeper Stefan Frei in the 78th minute.
Frei made a diving stop of a slow roller by Roger Espinosa in the first minute of stoppage time to preserve the draw, but Sounders coach Brian Schmetzer said he wanted more.
"I'm not happy. We should've won the game," Schmetzer said after the match. "But that's how MLS is. You've got to credit Zusi for making a play at the end there. But I thought we put enough into the game that we could've come out with the three points."
Sporting KC, which has played three more MLS games than Seattle, remained at the top of the Western Conference with 14 points.
