Juventus fight back to beat Benfica on penalties in International Champions Cup

Juventus fought back from a goal down to snatch victory vs. Benfica in a penalty shootout that ended 4-2.

Alex Sandro converted the winning spot kick after Jonas struck the woodwork with the Portuguese club's second attempt and Joao Felix had his effort saved by Juventus goalkeeper Mattia Perin.

The lottery of penalties was necessary after Alejandro Grimaldo and Luca Clemenza exchanged delightful goals to leave the score tied 1-1 after 90 minutes.

Grimaldo's free-kick strike on 65 minutes achieved an incredible amount of dip, which left Perin helpless. The Lisbon club's lead lasted just under 20 minutes, however, before Clemenza cut in from the right flank to blast a left-footed effort that crashed in off the underside of the bar.

The Bianconeri had their chances to take all three points. Mehdi Benatia directed a header that crashed back off the woodwork before Alex Sandro got his head on a corner kick that necessitated a sprawling save from Benfica goalkeeper Odisseas Vlachodimos.

But the decider wouldn't come, and a shootout beckoned.

The match came to a halt in the 35th minute after Facundo Ferreyra collided with teammate Jardel. The former's head made contact with the big centre-back's shoulder. Ferreyra stayed down for several minutes before being stretchered off wearing a neck brace.

Benfica provided no update on the status of Ferreyra during the second half.
