Edson Alvarez scores twice as Club America beats Cruz Azul for Liga MX Apertura title
Edson Alvarez scored twice as Club America beat Cruz Azul 2-0 on Sunday to win the 2018 Liga MX Apertura title.
The win at Estadio Azteca gives the Mexico City club a record 13th title, moving past Guadalajara for most all-time in Mexico's top flight division.
The first half continued the physical battle that characterized last week's scoreless first leg, also held at Azteca. America had three shots on goal while Cruz Azul went into the break without any.
Edson Alvarez's first goal came in the 51st minute. A lazy clearout from Cruz Azul goalkeeper Jose Corona to Ivan Marcone saw Oribe Peralta wrestle the ball from outside the penalty box and pass to Alvarez for a strike to the upper part of the net.
Alvarez added his second on the night in the 90th minute, taking advantage of Corona's mishandling of Cecilio Dominguez's shot that rebounded at his feet for the goal.
For Cruz Azul, its 21-year drought without a league championship will stretch for at least another season.
